Kohler Presents a Fresh Approach at Design Joburg
As Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View, hots up as the exhibition showcasing the best décor and design from the African continent, KOHLER are thrilled to present an extraordinary exhibit imagined and curated by 3 leading lights of local design.
Kelly Adami of Copperleaf, Nelson Kubheka of Ommni Design and Sumayya Vally and Sarah de Villiers from Counterspace will transform 50m2 of the Sandton Convention centre into the go-to destination for the latest in bathroom inspiration.
As Kohler celebrates 145 years in the industry, each design studio will be incorporating the very latest Kohler sanitary ware and taps into their feature. This will be a triple celebration of all that is Kohler in Africa with each presenting their personal interpretation of what and why they are drawn to Kohler’s bold and iconic design ethos.
The Counterspace duo, known for their creative exhibition and art installations, are planning a literal kaleidoscopic installation, working conceptually with the shapes and forms of basins in Kohler’s Artist Editions collection.
Copperleaf Studio’s Kelly Adami is aiming for a softer, more feminine approach in her creation of a luxe powder room with custom wall mural within a distinctive Art Deco inspired space.
Nelson Kubheka’s feature will very much be influenced by the rich minerals found in Africa like gold, copper and iron ore, creating an celebratory African experience including wallpaper inspired by bogolan motifs found in mud cloth.
Visitors to the show will also be able to take in a showcase of designs from the finalists in the Dream in Kohler design competition.
Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre From 25 to 27 May 2018.

SUMAYYA VALLY & SARAH DE VILLIERS OF COUNTERSPACE
What are you known for?
Counterspace is a Johannesburg-based, all-women team inspired by Johannesburg. The firm is dedicated to architectural projects, exhibition design, art installation visualisation, public events curation and urban design, which are often rigorously research-based. Our work is predominantly formed with ideas towards inclusivity, and inciting new visions and new ways of city and space making; using image and narrative as a means to deconstruct and reconstruct the city.
In 2015, the firm participated in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, where they showcased their work ‘Lost and Found’, in collaboration with international photographer, Jason Larkin.
Counterspace has also been involved with a number of graphic and curatorial projects with the Apartheid Museum, Local Studio and various universities in South Africa; in addition to various cultural architectural projects in rural and urbanized South Africa, and internationally.
Why the partnership with Kohler?
Kohler is part of a long legacy of iconic product design. We particularly like that they have mastered the use of expressive lines in many of their design-forms.
