Nelson Kubheka represents Africa at the KOHLER Experience Centre (KEC) in Mumbai, India

Johannesburg, South Africa – February XX, 2020 – Kohler Co., a global leader in the design and manufacture of kitchen and bath products, is a design forward brand that actively seeks to inspire and innovate, pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the architecture and design sector.

Opened in December 2019, Shakti Mills, South Mumbai is the location of the latest KOHLER Experience Centre, a 1500 square meter design hub that aims to show consumers and the design world what the brand is capable of. Using fully installed interactive displays that feature over 1,000 of the brand’s products, luxury Kohler ranges, including the Kallista brand, are brought to life.

With their commitment to elevating promising local designers by providing them with an international stage, Kohler turned to Ommni Design’s South African designer, Nelson Kubheka to create one of 7 Designer Suites for the KEC BOM Inspiration Zone. Ommni Design creates upscale interiors and spatial solutions for residential, commercial and hospitality clients across Africa.

Just two years prior, at Design Joburg 2018, Kubheka’s Kohler bathroom redefined African glamour with its mineral inspired take on a sophisticated bathroom that nodded to his own roots. So successful was the space, that Kubheka was chosen to recreate it halfway around the world in Mumbai.

Kubheka’s bathroom is a slick affair, using a sensual combination of black with brass finishes and iconic African symbolism such as his wildly popular Bogolan wallpaper. His is one of 7 suites designed by international architecture and design luminaries including the likes of Italy’s Paola Navone and Studio Lotus and Pinakin Design of India. Each of the studios was tasked with creating a bathroom that pushes the envelope in luxury design using Kohler’s finest products under a unique theme.

KEC BOM is spread over two floors and, over and above the Inspiration Zone, includes a gorgeous co-working space to facilitate the design specification process, a Café, Lab area where the brand’s journey of innovation and performance can be experienced, a Warehouse to facilitate product specifications, Artist Editions showcase, auditorium lit by skylights for key events and more.

KEC BOM is the definition of possibility made real; it’s a design-forward space where Kohler’s boundless creativity can be fully experienced. For Kubheka, the chance to showcase his talent on a competitive international platform, is a golden opportunity and one that Kohler is proud to drive.
